Genetic test 'to predict origins'

Picture
Researchers have found that DNA analysis can predict the origins of rural people to within five miles of their family's home, a discovery that could help find the roots of city dwellers who have ancestors within their country.

A team - led by Jim Wilson - from the University of Edinburgh studied the genes of people whose four grandparents came from the same village in Scotland, Croatia or Italy. None of the volunteers were related to each other.

The results showed that by studying genetic differences, individuals who live in villages that are only five miles apart could be distinguished from each other.

University approves giant telescope

Plans to construct the world's largest telescope at the summit of Mauna Kea have been approved by the University of Hawaii Board of Regents.

The Thirty Metre Telescope (TMT) is expected to help astronomers observe stars and galaxies up to 13 billion light years away and solve some of the mysteries of the early universe.

Its 100-ft long segmented primary mirror will provide nine times the collecting area and three times the resolution of the largest optical telescopes currently in use.
